Diamondback Chinese Adds Sizzle to Sabian's Neil Peart Paragon Cymbals

Product Pipeline:
Diamondback Chinese Adds Sizzle to Sabian's Neil Peart Paragon Cymbals

The 20” Paragon Diamondback Chinese is the latest collaboration between legendary Rush drummer Neil Peart and SABIAN. This thin, highly responsive model features a wide-flanged circumference punctuated by industrial cotter pins holding a total of four jingles that vibrate when the cymbal is struck. To increase the sizzle of the Diamondback the jingles are positioned in the shallow of the flange so they vibrate on both the bow and the edge, while a single rivet is positioned between each of the four jingle placements (a ‘magic combination,’ according to Peart). The sound is complex, sizzling, and very easy to activate.

“While recording Snakes and Arrows,” said Peart, “a couple songs called for a different texture, something with a subtle stick sound, and a wispy, kind of ethereal voice, but with sizzle… like a traditional rivet cymbal, but with more ‘presence’.”

The Diamondback Chinese is handcrafted from premium SABIAN B20 ‘cast’ bronze and is quality protected by the SABIAN One-Year Warranty.

“Like the rest of our Paragon range,” added Peart, “the Diamondback is a testament to the creative and uncompromising work of Mark Love and the other dedicated craftsmen at SABIAN. They share my vision that a cymbal company’s ultimate product, after all, is music.”

Hands-On Product Review: Force ’07 Series Drums

Hands-On Product Review: Force ’07 Series Drums
German-engineered elegance
By Michael Parminter
Force ’07 Series Drums

Classify these as good times for drummers. There’s never been such an abundance of well-put-together, affordable drum sets available to players before. All the good choices out there, though, can actually make it more challenging to sort through the options.

Anyone who’s into drums knows that the Sonor name has always been highly regarded by players, so I was stoked when Musician’s Friend invited me to try out the upper tiers of Sonor’s Force Series, the 2007 and 3007. The Force Series was introduced in the ’90s as a more easily affordable alternative to the higher-level Sonor lines, and has continued to evolve and improve over the years.
Change is good

This year the whole series has been significantly redesigned and overhauled. Critical tooling equipment was transported from the Sonor mothership in Germany to their state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in China, a move calculated to achieve the highest possible quality-to-cost ratio.

The woods used in the shell construction of the series have evolved. The 3007 Series all-maple shells are a 9-ply, 7mm design, with middle layers of Asian maple sandwiched between inner and outer plies of Canadian maple. Many of the world’s finest drums are made of Canadian maple, prized for its rich, warm sound and long sustain.

The 2007 model drums were a dark-horse hit at this year’s NAMM show. These drums have birch shells, currently in vogue with a lot of players for their aggressive attack, enhanced punch, and slightly darker character.

The lugs have been upgraded with a design that’s both functionally and aesthetically superior to past models. The ’07 Series lugs are modeled after Sonor’s German-made Delite and SQ2 series, with an internal tune-safe system that keeps the lugs from detuning as standard lugs are apt to do, especially when played by heavy hitters.

Also new is the move to slightly shallower, so-called "FAST" tom shell sizes—gone are the cannon-like deeper shells of the past. This change gives the drums quicker attack, more versatile tone, and a wider tuning range.

Sonor has long touted the strength of their shells, demonstrating this in one memorable ad by showing a headless rack tom shell lying on its side with a big brutish fellow standing on it. The secret to the great strength of the shells lies in Sonor’s proprietary cross-laminated, layered design.

To ensure the rack toms’ sustain is uncompromised, the tom mounts use Sonor’s TAR (Total Acoustic Resonance) system to minimize the contact between the shell and the mounting hardware.

When you play an exceptional set of drums there’s an emotional connection, an intangible quality, a wholeness that adds up to more than the sum of the parts. As I lugged the four boxes containing the 2007 and 3007 sets into my home studio, I wondered if I would be forging such a connection with these kits.

As I removed the drums from their boxes, the high quality of the shells was apparent—the inner layers were flawless, and the bearing edges (essential to good sound) were unflaggingly precise.

The ’07’s exterior surfaces are now finished using a new wax/gloss process that makes these drums exceptionally beautiful. After assembling the 3007s and giving them a quick tuning, I had to just stand back and soak in the visuals—the Midnight Fade finish glowed like molten sapphire, allowing the beautiful grain patterns to show through just enough to let your eyes slow down and enjoy the ride.
Sound check

When it came to playing the 3007s, I wasn’t disappointed—I wasn’t even in the same zip code as disappointment. These drums sang like Pavarotti. Each tom resounded with a deep, clear fundamental note; was clean on the attack; and had the characteristic warm resonance of maple. The matching wood snare was both sensitive and powerfully punchy, never sounding choked or flat, regardless of how hard I hit it. The 22" bass drum sounded splendidly fat, and the 16" floor tom growled like a bear.

The resplendent Amber Fade 2007s were also a feast for the eyes and ears. Their birch shells made them a little harder-edged and quicker on the attack than the 3007s, with punchiness worthy of a kung fu master.

The hardware, while plenty heavy duty enough to stand up to the slings and arrows of outrageous touring, has a slightly rounded, retro look that gives the set a classy, timeless appearance. Heavyweight, easy-to-grip wing nuts allow you to adjust the mounted toms easily to any position via the ball-and-socket-type tom holder. The bass spurs, floor tom legs, and cymbal stands are all capped with beefy, vibration-dampening rubber feet.

Apparently the 1007 and 507 sets are, in most respects, very comparable to their Force Series siblings that I tried, save for basswood construction and on the 507, a metal snare drum and different lugs.
Force to be reckoned with

Sonor hit all the right notes this time around with their Force Series. Nothing about the Force sets I had the pleasure of playing intimates any kind of corner cutting or compromise, representing a great value for the dollars. They have the sound and look of drums that are the result of enlightened, thoughtful design and execution. Write it down: the Force is irresistible!

Roland Percussion Pads

Roland Percussion Pads
Drums for the new millennium

When humans descended from the trees and began whacking logs with sticks, a percussion paradigm was established. Rhythmic patterns are best achieved when we hit objects with other objects, be they our hands, drumsticks, mallets, etc. If you've ever tried to establish a rhythmic groove using a keyboard alone, you know how tough that can be.

Roland Percussion Pads
Roland's pads retain all the physics and dynamics of whacking objects while opening up a world of sounds, effects, and grooves that would require a warehouse to store and a lifetime to learn. Whether you're a drummer wanting to expand your acoustic or electronic drum kit or a musician seeking powerful, natural grooves in the studio or onstage, they're your passport to percussive bliss.

SPD-6: mojo plus MIDI
The most basic and affordable Roland pad set delivers a lot of performance and compositional possibilities. Six velocity-sensitive pads can be played with sticks or your hands-a toggle lets you set sensitivity. I found I could easily avoid cross-triggering.

The SPD-6 offers 32 patches-16 factory and 16 user including conventional sets, hand percussion, and effects. Altogether you've got 113 sounds grouped in four banks to play with. I was particularly impressed with the conga's realism.

Eight buttons let you select patches, parameters, and values. Though there is no display as such, I found navigating through these processes was quite straightforward.

With MIDI out, the SPD-6 serves as a triggering device and with a pair of optional footpedals you can more naturally control your hi-hats and kick drum.

SPD-20: upping the ante
With a whole lot more waveform memory, a bigger working surface, and 14-voice polyphony, this senior sibling gives you the power to create highly complex rhythm tracks. If you've balked at diving whole-hog into Roland's V-Drum technology, here's a viable alternative.

The SPD-20's 700 pristine sounds range from dry acoustic drums to jazz, old school, funk, rock, pop, Latin, and orchestral sets. If you're a devotee of Roland's ultra-phat TB808 and 909 beats, you'll find them too. It's also loaded with outrageous ethnic percussion from all points of the globe-particularly nice for creating dance and world music with all of their eclectic instruments.

Even if you don't know a paradiddle from a press roll there are drum loops and rolls to help you construct convincing rhythm tracks. Editing is easy with an interface that makes short work of adjusting parameters. The eight pad zones respond realistically to traditional drumming techniques such as rolls and flams. You can also layer different sounds on the same pad by assigning velocity-dependent triggering so that based on your stick technique you can alternate, for example, between rim shots and full-on snare hits.

With four trigger inputs you can use other pads or even your acoustic kit to trigger sounds. Adding the optional

FD-7 Hi-Hat Control Pedal lets you trigger open and closed hat sounds. The optional KD-7 Kick Trigger lets you employ your favorite kick pedal.

SPD-S: slick sampling machine
If you want to incorporate sampling into your setup sidestepping the need for rack samplers, acoustic triggers, and MIDI programming, here's your pad.

The surface includes six pads plus three edge triggers that with eight-voice polyphony let you construct elaborate tracks. With three sound-quality modes, the sampler imports up to 360 seconds of sounds and phrases at CD-quality 44.1kHz. The CompactFlash card slot provides a pathway to the entire world of electronic percussion.

Of course, the SPD-S comes with a full complement of preloaded waves that run the gamut from acoustic drums to exotic percussion instruments to effects and phrase loops. The Phrase Maker helps you create custom loops easily.

HandSonic: put your paws on it
For the hand percussionist and those of us whose stick technique is rough, this baby is IT! The 10" circular pad is split into 15 zones with a control surface that's both sleek and easy to understand. Flanking the pad are a pair of ribbon controllers and a D-Beam controller. It's armed with 600 sounds, 160 presets, 80 user patches, a host of effects, and a sequencer that has its own set of 99 preset and 99 user patterns.

Though the menu-driven parameter settings are deep, I have to admit that during my first evening messing with the HandSonic, I never got beyond the presets. Twirling the jog dial through 10 sound categories brought up an incredible array of acoustic drums, shakers, timpani, electronic drums, and much more. I was especially impressed with some of the Latin and African percussion as well as tabla voices that have sharp edge sounds contrasting with open sounds at the center of the pad.

As with all the units, the HandSonic is standmountable for performance. The ribbon and D-Beam controllers coupled with hi-hat and kick triggering plus 18-note polyphony let you get a whole lot of percussion going all at once.

Remo Rolls Out 'Drum Days LA' for City's Youth

Remo Drums celebrates its 50th anniversary by giving back to the city that has been home for 50 years. “Drum Days LA” is a multicultural celebration of the power of rhythm, a power that unites people in joy and celebration. The theme Diversity through Drumming reinforces the universal appeal of drumming.

Beginning July 12 and continuing through Aug. 22, Remo, in partnership with LA’s Department of Recreation and Parks, will sponsor a series of weekly drumming workshops with low-income youths from five urban rec centers. The kids, ranging in age from eight to 14 and totaling roughly 35, will form a drum ensemble as part of their summer camp program. Each group will be taught a culturally specific drum performance by a Remo master percussionist. They will learn African, Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin, and Brazilian drumming, and in the process learn about the similarities of many diverse cultures.

The kids will then perform their composition at one of three community Drum Days concerts on consecutive Saturdays in August. They will join headline performers like Grammy Award-winning master conguero Poncho Sanchez and djembe master Leon Mobley.

“Remo, Inc. is encouraging participation in the recreational use of musical instruments as a life enhancement process which has been validated through extensive research,” said Remo, Inc. founder and CEO Remo Belli. “Group drumming has been demonstrated to be one of the most accessible group activities for this purpose.”

For the Drum Days finale, Remo will pass out drums to the audience for an impromptu community drum circle.

TECH TIP: Liven Up Your Electronic Drums

TECH TIP: Liven Up Your Electronic Drums
by Craig Anderton

In today’s rhythm-based music, there’s nothing worse than a dull drum pattern that doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do: Get people moving! Even if you come up with a good part, though, what about your sounds? Real drums have complex timbre changes that add excitement; if you want electronic drums to have the same kind of excitement, you need to create those timbral variations yourself.

Fortunately, today’s soft synths, samplers, and groove boxes have rich editing options. By tweaking a few parameters, you can create more expressive, powerful, and personalized sounds. Here are some of my favorite drum tweaks.
Pitch Shifting

Pitch control parameters are very useful. You can:

* Accommodate different musical styles. Some house music pitches drums lower, whereas drum ’n’ bass often pitches them up. You may not need a new set of samples – try retuning the ones you have.
* Create multiple drum sounds from one. Want to play a two-hand shaker part, but you have only one shaker sample? Copy it, then detune the copy by a semitone or so to provide a slight sonic variation. Detuning can also create a family of toms out of one tom sample.
* Tune drums to the song’s key, particularly with toms and resonant kick drums (such as the famously overused TR-808 "hum drum"). If the kick is out of tune with the bass, the sound can be muddy, and weaken the entire rhythm section. If fine tuning is not available as a control (sometimes you can change tuning only in semitones), you may be able to feed in a constant amount of pitch bend instead.
* Use radical transpositions to create new sounds. Most drum boxes don’t have a gong sound, but here’s how to create one. First, take your longest cymbal sound and detune it by 12 to 20 semitones. Create another version of the cymbal and detune it by about 3 semitones. Layer the two together; the slightly detuned cymbal gives a convincing attack, while the highly detuned one provides the necessary sustain.
* If your drum sound source can assign velocity to pitch modulation, you can increase dynamics by programming high velocity levels to add a very slight upward pitch shift. This works best if you apply velocity to the pitch envelope amount, then modulate the drum’s pitch from the envelope. This way, after attacking at a higher pitch, the drum will fall back to the normal pitch. A small increase emulates a drum’s skin being stretched, hence pitched higher, when it’s first hit.

Changing the Sample Start Point

Altering a sample’s start point under velocity control can add convincing dynamics.

Most drum machines won’t do this, but many synths and samplers will. Generally, you set the initial sample start point several tens, or even hundreds, of milliseconds "late" into the sample so it’s past where the attack occurs. Now assign negative velocity to modulate the sample start point. At low velocities, you don’t hear the signal’s initial attack; higher velocities kick the sample point further toward the beginning, until at maximum velocity you hear the entire attack.

If you already have a good MIDI drum part but it lacks dynamics, you can add sample start modulation after recording. Overdub a controller track using a mod wheel or MIDI fader, and assign the controller to sample start time.
Filter Modulation

For additional dynamic control, assign velocity to filter cutoff so that hitting the drum harder produces a slightly brighter sound. This gives extra emphasis to the hardest hits, making the drums feel more "alive." Soft taps will sound a bit muted.
Hi-Hat Amplitude Envelope Decay Modulation

One of the most annoying "features" of electronic drums is the hi-hat. A real drummer is constantly working the hi-hat, opening and closing it with the pedal, but the electronic version is an unchanging snapshot. Sure, you can program a combination of open, half-closed, and closed hi-hat notes, and assign them to a mute group (see below) so each will cut off the others, but programming a rhythm with three hat sounds is boring, and doesn’t always sound that realistic.

A more expressive option is to use a MIDI controller, such as mod wheel, to vary an open hi-hat sound’s envelope decay time. Close the decay for a closed hi-hat; as you increase the decay, the hi-hat opens gradually. I usually play the hi-hat note with my right hand and move the mod wheel with my left, but this is also an operation that lends itself well to "post-processing" – record the part, then overdub the controller changes necessary to create a more expressive track.
Overdrive

Most drums have a quick initial attack, followed by an abrupt decay. Adding a little bit of overdrive distortion will "crunch" the attack’s first few milliseconds, while leaving the decay untouched. You can do this with an overdrive or distortion plug-in, or modify the sample itself using a digital audio editor, then loading it into the drum module.

This affects the sound in three important ways:

* You can raise the overall average level of the drum for a louder perceived sound, because the overdrive effect will limit the percussive attack. This is like using a dynamic range limiter.
* It creates a short period of time where the sound is at its maximum level, thus contributing a feeling of "punch."
* It increases the attack’s harmonic content, producing a brighter attack.

Mute Groups

When drums are assigned to a mute group, hitting a drum that’s part of the group will cut off any other drum from the group that’s still sounding. This is mostly intended for hi-hats, so that playing a closed hi-hat sound will shut off an open hi-hat. But there are other uses for mute groups:

* Assign toms with long decays to the same mute group. Too many simultaneous tom decays can muddy up a track. When you assign them to the same mute group, not only do tom rolls sound cleaner, but you conserve polyphony.
* If you have some rhythmic loops loaded into your sampler along with individual drum sounds, make the loops part of a mute group (assuming, of course, you don’t plan to layer them). This is particularly important if you’re playing live. Suppose you have a bunch of four-measure loops, but you’re hitting a build and you want to switch quickly between the first measure, or first two measures, of various loops. Assigning loops to the same mute group means you can start them whenever you like, knowing that the other ones will shut up when you do.

Single-Cycle Looping

This sampling-oriented trick can turn a quick hit into one with a loooooooong decay, particularly with toms and kicks.

Loop a single cycle in the drum’s decay tail so it repeats indefinitely. Then, apply an amplitude envelope to give the decay the desired length. Try different individual cycles for looping; they may appear almost identical in the waveform display, but some will usually loop better than others, and the harmonic content may differ as well. Also try adding some pitch shift to the decay so it goes lower in pitch as it decays.
Click Layering

Sometimes modulating an existing sample just isn’t enough to create serious dynamics. This is where a click sample or sound can come in handy.

For samplers, create a click sample. I made mine by simply drawing some spikes in a digital audio editor for about 35ms, and saved that as a file. With synthesized drums, you can make a good click by applying maximum, extremely short pitch modulation to a white noise source or buzzy oscillator, then impose a very quick amplitude decay.

The goal is to layer the click with another sound, such as kick. But choose a velocity curve where the click is very quiet at lower velocity levels, so that the click appears only in the upper dynamic range of the sound with which it is layered. As you play harder, the click will become more audible, adding punch to the drum sound. A little lowpass filtering on the click will help blend the two sounds to taste.

Remember, machines don’t make dull music – people do. If you want your drum parts to really grab your listeners, use some of these tricks to help your sounds come alive.
