Sabian Cymbal Sets Get New Carton Design, New Additions

Sabian has revamped the packaging for its Sonically Matched cymbal sets. It has also launched its 2007 cymbal set promotion by introducing a selection of high value new sets in its best-selling, budget level B8 and B8 Pro series.

To help dealers build consumer excitement and traffic, Sabian has stepped up their launch of their 2007 line of value-added cymbal packs. Yamaha’s Tour Custom Series was first manufactured in the ’80s and early ’90s, a solid mid- to high-level line popular among working pros and school bands. The big news is that Yamaha has just introduced an all-maple-shell version. Maple is coveted by drum builders for its big, warm tone and vibrant projection, and is the wood of choice for Yamaha’s top-of-the-line Absolute Maple nouveau drums.
The mojo of maple

While unpacking the drums, I admired the brown sunburst finish of the maple shells, the gleaming low-mass chrome lugs providing a nice contrast to the dark color. The Fusion set delivers a wide tonal range in the toms, ranging from a 10" x 8" high mounted tom down to the big 16" x 16" floor tom.

After giving the set a basic tuning, I laid down a few beats. The drums felt responsive and punchy, with a rich, slightly mellow tone. This probably has to do with the 60° bearing edges of the shells. It’s the first time Yamaha maple shells have been cut to this spec, and it gives the drums a clear fundamental tone, reduces excess ring, and adds warmth.

I replaced the front bass drum resonant head with a ported front head, as most drummers would do to prepare the set for gigging. I then placed a small pillow inside the 22" x 17" bass drum, and it delivered a satisfying low-frequency thump. Full and round sounding, the kick had just enough sustain to let it integrate sonically with the rest of the kit.

The 6" x 14" snare had both snappy, sensitive high-end response and plenty of mid-range body. This is a very versatile snare—you can crank it up high and it’s perfect for club dates or jazz gigs—tune it lower and it has the presence needed for concert hall-filling sound.


I received a five-piece Fusion configuration of the Tour Custom with a floor tom for review. (The set is also available with a suspended floor tom.) I received the version of the kit with Yamaha’s single-braced 700 Series hardware pack. For playing gigs around town, the lightweight strength of the 700 Series hardware would be a good fit. If you have your own hardware, you might want to save some cash by choosing the Tour Custom shell pack version.

For serious touring, you may prefer the double-braced 800 Series hardware option—industrial-strength stuff that will stand up to whatever the road throws at it. However, Steve Gadd and countless other top drummers use the 700 Series hardware on tour.

The TH-945 Ball Clamp and Triple Tom Holder comes standard with all versions of the Tour Custom. The ball is made of super-hard resin, and manipulating a single bolt lets you adjust the angles of your toms to your preference easily and quickly. The design makes adding another tom or cymbal as simple as inserting another tom ball clamp or cymbal holder.

Every aspect down to the wing nuts has been designed to function intuitively and ergonomically. Yamaha’s hardware is very functional, at times even elegant, and is one element that gives their drums an edge.

Maple Tour Customs are the latest drums to roll out of Yamaha’s Indonesia drum division, where advanced engineering is combined with skilled craftsmanship in a modern factory that’s a model for the industry.

The strict standards of quality control and high production standards that originated in Yamaha’s legendary Japanese drum manufacturing plant in Osaka have obviously been exported to Indonesia. Every piece of metal used in the drums minus the tension rods is made in their motorcycle facility, so you can expect light weight and high strength to be the norm.
Signed, air-sealed, and delivered

Every Yamaha drum shell is constructed using their Air Seal System to produce drum shells of legendary strength and perfect roundness. Two—or three—ply master plies are cut to very precise tolerances with a diagonal angle at each end. The plies are glued and then placed into a mold one at a time with the diagonal seams staggered for increased strength. An air bag is then inserted into the mold and inflated, clamping the shell with 360° pressure all around. This process creates perfectly round shells of incredible strength.
Quality you can feel

Maple Tour Custom drums look and sound great, and are versatile sets that would be excellent for heavy touring, club dates around town, or as a main kit for educational institutions or churches. The Sound Bridge high-tension, low-mass lug was specifically designed for Superstar. Sound Bridge's unique structure looks much like a traditional high-tension lug, but the body of the lug "floats" over the shell to minimize shell contact so the drum can resonate to its fullest. However, Sound Bridge still offers all the benefits of the traditional high-tension lug: it offsets the tension of the batter side and bottom side heads, reduces the stress on the shell, and provides greater protection to the drum shell during transport.

All Superstar "Power Craft" drum heads ensure a great sound practically right out of the box. Batter-side heads are made of Dupont Mylar film for richer tone and greater durability. Ring mufflers on bass drum heads remove the need for extra internal muffling.

All Superstar kits come standard with upgraded Roadpro cymbal stands. The toothless Quick-Set cymbal tilter lets you adjust the angle freely and hold it in position by the friction of six metal disc plates instead of gears. You're completely free to adjust it to any angle you desire. This mechanism also has a more durable structure than the conventional gear tilter.

The fourth generation of Yamaha’s DTXpress Series electronic drums is here with a sleek new module, improved sounds, and an impressive list of features for playing live and increasing the effectiveness of your practice sessions. When Musician’s Friend asked me to review Yamaha’s DTXpress IV drum set, I was curious to see what the state-of-the-art in electronic percussion held in store after several decades of mostly playing a traditional acoustic kit.
Keeping it real

The DTXpress IV’s rubber pads have a lively response that realistically mimics the response of acoustic drumheads. The DTXpress IV Special version that I tested includes three single-zone tom pads, three round cymbal pads (two three-zone cymbals, plus a single-zone ride), a kick pad, hi-hat controller with stand, and the tubular rack. A three-zone pad serves as the snare drum, allowing you to play the essential snare sounds—snare, rimshot, and cross-stick.

The KP65 kick module attaches to a sturdy bracket for rock-solid action, accommodating any standard foot pedal. The kick sounds it creates with the module are slamming—this would be a great drum set for crowding the dance floor. The swinging motion of the PCY cymbal pads gives you the feel of playing a real cymbal much more convincingly than a static surface does. The three-trigger PCY150S cymbal allows you to play individual sounds on the bell, ride surface, and edge.

The set is easy to set up and break down. You simply fold up the rack, which can be done without even removing the drum pads or hardware. An included labeled cable snake makes plugging in the pads a no-brainer. During my first test drive, I jacked in to my home studio’s sound system for amplification, using headphones for this late-night session so as not to wake the neighbors.

The hi-hat controller pad mounts on the included HS650 Yamaha hi-hat that comes with the DTXpress Special, letting you generate authentic-sounding open, closed, and splash hi-hat sounds.
Serious sounds

The DTX IV module gives you 427 drum and percussion sounds with an additional 50 keyboard/effects voices. There are 50 preset kits and 20 user presets for creating your own custom kits. Among the presets you’ll find excellent samples of some of Yamaha’s acoustic drum sets, among the world’s finest, including their Maple, Oak, and Beech Custom models.

The sounds are excellent, crossing a wide range of styles with vintage drums, power rock kits, jazz brush kits, ’80s electronica, drum ’n’ bass, industrial, reggae, hip-hop, and various world percussion kits. Effects sounds range from scratches and other turntable sounds to didgeridoo to trains and police sirens to vocal hits.

A kit called Social Cuban features bongo, conga, and bell voices. It’s configured with the bass drum playing a cowbell sound and the hi-hat foot playing a wood block, so if you’re into Latin rhythms you can work on your left-foot clave technique.

A Drum Corps kit lets you practice your field drumming chops complete with marching snare and field toms, while an Orchestral kit includes tympani, crash cymbals, and other symphonic sounds. Some of the presets trigger loops and phrases by hitting different pads, so if you like you can sound like a whole band ala Akiro Jimbo. Overall the sound set is high quality and quite extensive.

Get with the program

Programming your own custom drum kits and songs into the DTXpress IV is made easy via a compact set of buttons and a jog wheel for front panel navigation. Extensive control over the volume, tuning, pan, decay, filter, MIDI characteristics, and more let you sculpt the sounds to your preferences. You can even adjust the "tightness" of the snares on the snare drum.

Onboard digital reverb adds depth and ambience to the sounds with 16 effect presets to choose from. A two-band master EQ lets you dial in the desired amount of bass and high-end frequencies. There are 20 user spaces for storing your customized drum kits, with another 20 user spaces for one-track songs you can record with the sequencer.
Personal time-keeping trainer

Musicians many levels of experience and expertise will get a lot of use out of the extensive metronome and rhythm training features here. A sophisticated programmable metronome gives you an assortment of click tracks to play along with to refine your timing or you can create your own metronome tracks. You can also play along with any of the onboard songs and, if you like, mute the drum part to see how your playing compares.

The Groove Check function further hones your rhythmic skills by giving you a display that shows whether your playing is behind, ahead, or right on time. The rhythm gate function takes this method a step further by only playing the notes that are accurate and silencing errant strokes. The tolerance automatically narrows if your hits are accurate and widens if your hits are inaccurate. These are invaluable training tools for increasing accuracy of players at any skill level.

The enhanced sounds, recording and rhythm training capabilities, and natural-feeling pads have a lot to offer for drum students and advanced players. The ease of integrating electronic drums into digital recording should make the DTXpress IV tempting to home recording enthusiasts as well as studio pros. Whether you’re a veteran drummer or an up-and-coming talent, you should check out the DTXPress IV.
